Unfortunately, I learned to appreciate them after I moved 5,000 klm away. Is that always the case?! You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone?!
My parents met in Gastown and married 8 weeks later. My mom says that when she saw him across the parking lot, it was like time stood still and they were the only ones around. That will be 39 years ago this upcoming October.
As you can tell by the photo, they’re a mushy couple. I remember, as a child, always seeing them kissy and huggy and groppy. 38 years later, it’s even worse – in a good way!! They are practically inseparable, they even work 7 days a week side by side. One time my mom came out here (I live near Toronto) without my dad, she was so sad and missed him so much, it was only a few days…
They both work very hard to be able to provide for their family. I have 2 older sisters and 1 younger sister – not to mention all the others that came to live with us over the years – from foster kids to family members. Our house was always full!
They owned & ran many businesses along the way, a Design company in the 70’s to early 90’s (btw, proud moment – my dad was listed in the top 10 designers/architects in Canada) which also included a construction company & furniture making business. My mom owned a clothing store while I was a teen, that came in handy! Then they purchased a property management company but that wasn’t enough! In 2002 they bought a diner and turned it into the best restaurant in White Rock and if that wasn’t enough… last year they added a cheese market and bake shop! Sometimes I wonder how they have time to travel the world!!
But more important than how they provided for us, is the way they loved us and cared for us. In the thick of it as a teen, it was seen as overbearing but it’s amazing what time (and having children of my own) does to one’s perception… They didn’t just take us to church, they birthed within me a deep love for God and for others around me – thinking of others first! They exampled before us girls a lifestyle of generosity. They showed us that when you fight… you make up and you do it quickly!
So before I start crying over my keyboard… that’s where I’m going to leave it for now. Thank you Mom and Daddio. You did good! I love you deeply!!
