I’ve heard it all my life…

“Watch what you say!”
“If you don’t have anything good to say – don’t say anything at all!”

come on… we’ve all heard those phrases in one form or another. Did you know that they are statements that are Biblically founded?

Proverbs 18:21 says that life and death are in the power of the tongue. It’s not referring to the strength of that particular muscle either but the power of the words it produces. Throughout the Bible God says that our speech is tremendously important, powerful and significant. Words kill, words give life; they’re either fruit or poison – the choice is yours.

Did you know that Jesus said we will one day give an account for every idle word? Matthew 12:36-37 I used to think, “How can God keep track of every word I say?” It doesn’t mean every word but every idle word. Do you know what the word, “idle” means? IDLE = careless, nonworking, inoperative. That means every word that does not produce life (fruitless), we are cautioned not to speak them because there will be a time of reckoning. Words will be our salvation or our damnation. Words are that powerful!! If that’s not a moment to sit up and take notice… I don’t know what is?! We need to carefully consider what kinds of words are coming out of our mouths.

When you speak, let it be God’s words that come out of your mouth. 1 Peter 4:11 Which means… you’re going to need to know His word!!

David knew the importance of our words and what we think upon. In Psalms 19:14 he says, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” David asked that both be pleasing to God.

Words are seeds.

Sometimes the words we use may seem so insignificant but we must realize that they hold great power. The words we speak directly effect our actions, they eventually set the boundaries in our lives and ultimately effect our destiny.
