The Beast has died.
Beast was our very first family-sized vehicle. He became ours in January 2000 while I was expecting child #2. Almost 300,000 klms later… our Pontiac Montana mini-van is gone.
His rust was so bad that we didn’t dare bathe him for fear of losing large chunks of metal.
You could dress him up…

Since I’m kinda between big/primary jobs, we decided to try to be a one car family. One car and four kids and a busy husband, leaves me stuck at home FAR TOO OFTEN. It SUCKS to have one car.
MY Beauty is starting to smell like HIS Beast!

In October when Chevrolet Canada sent me their new 2012 Chevy Sonic to test drive, I was excited to be in something that #1 only I could drive and #2… didn’t smell like stale farts!
Delivery day was very exciting!

Driving it was even more fun!
I look good in a Red car! |
Filling it to the brim with all our goodies from BlissDom Canada… absolutely delightful! It was a good thing there were only two of us in the car, after the conference there was no room for anyone else! Tara and I had it packed to the roof!
No more room! |
The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic was very fun to drive. Very sporty. I liked the amount of space I had with the front windshield – I had a full view, with no blind-spots. I didn’t feel like I was in a small car at all. I didn’t feel insignificant on the road! I also liked the child-safety door lock, controlled from a button between the front seats!
I had the Sonic for a week but in that week, I drove to and from Toronto {over 100 klms one way} and around Toronto trying to find a restaurant, in the rain, in a strange city, for Janice {5 Minutes for Mom}, Tara {Tara’s View of the World} and myself to go to. With all that driving… I only used 1/2 a tank of gas!

For someone who was single or a smaller family, I’d recommend the Chevy Sonic. I have four kids and am not very fond of my oldest sitting in the front seat. Even though he’s 13 now, he’s not quite 80 lbs yet and those tragic front air bag stories run through my head frequently.
I am looking for a second family car. Having only one car has made it difficult not just to leave the house whenever I want… but I do have a few clients with my media / productions company and meeting them… has become close to impossible.
The hunt for a proper second vehicle continues…
Thank you Chevrolet Canada for lending me a vehicle to get around while attending BlissDom Canada 2011!
Great review of the car! Sorry to hear of the sad fate your van.
Love that you are consciously aware of the danger of the airbag and the small stature of your child. Too many parents rush their kids out of a booster and then rush to let them ride in the front seat. Big high fives to you!! As a car seat tech, I wish more parents were like you.
I LOVE your video review!!! I have a little car like the Sonic (Nissan Juke) and LOVE LOVE LOVE it even in the winter b/c it's AWD. I of course have 3 children and I can squeeze them all in the back seat (2 car seats and all!) but if we're going out as a family or doing a large grocery shop we take my husband's truck. You need a van (boring!) or a 7 seater SUV. Happy Shopping!
Love the car, you look good in red!
Great video!
We had the Chevy Cruze for Blissdom and I was amazed at the gas mileage and how much fun it was to drive. Chevy is doing some great stuff!
Good luck on the vehicle quest-it is so hard sharing a vehicle after you have had your own for a while!
I used to have a red car…red is fun. They say people drive faster in red cars. hmmm I wonder why?

Great review. We have a tiny car now and I am desperate for something bigger that would fit at least one more adult as we like to go places with my mom. Sadly our car with 2 car seats doesn't do it. we can't even fit the dog and cat for next time we move. Will be hard to part with our car though. She is still in great shape and paid off. we are not in a rush for car payments.
I miss you!!
Shan! That car looks wicked!
I like your post and thanks for sharing it.
