My husband has been winter camping since he was a kid. He keeps us occupied with story after story about his trips into some of Canada’s greatest National Parks in the winter with his dad, cousins and uncles growing up. Camping is in his blood… it runs in his family. Winter camping is no different.

Dave passed this part of the gene pool onto our oldest son. The two of them have enjoyed several  winter camping trips together. They’ve stayed in everything from tents – to igloos they build themselves – to Yurts. Not for a night or even a weekend… we’re talking a 7-10 days here.

To be honest… I’d rather him come home with stories about ice storms and -24c weather than the stories from their summer portaging trips with lighting strikes and bears!

Yesterday we experienced our first real snow fall, with significant levels of the white stuff, since the winter of 2009. To say the boys were excited would be an understatement and not only because the schools were closed for a snow-day.

Not only did our snow-blower FINALLY get a work out for the first times in more than 3 years, but so did our ICEBOX igloo construction kit.  Dave and Q spent over 4 hours working on a place for them to spend the night.

Yes, they built an igloo in our backyard and are spending the night in it!

This is what the igloo looks like at night (sorry it’s out of focus).  Q loaded it up with their MEC extreme-weather mummy bags and Therm-a-Rest air mattresses.

and here’s Q inside the igloo, all bundled up and ready for the night.

Good night, sleep tight… don’t the frost bite… 😀
