There’s been a shift in society regarding age and what someone in their 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and beyond should look and act like.
The 80’s were not so kind to women…
In the photo below, my mom is a bridesmaid in her sister’s wedding, she may be all of 41. That’s her mother to her left, my NeeNee. When I think of how old my grandmother was, I know it was the era to look older than you were!! People expected you to dress and act “mature”… She was only in her early 60’s but if I were to show this picture to my kids today, they’d probably guess she was a little closer to 80.
When I think of my mom today, she is more fashion forward than she was 30 years ago, and she still has that great skin! That can be said of society as a whole actually, people no longer “act their age” as they did in decades past.
Canadian women no longer feel defined by their chronological age? In fact, 90 per cent believe that age will continue to become less relevant.
This is true for my mom. This picture below was taken by my dad while on a trip to Mexico in 2013, she was celebrating her 71st birthday. I think she looks younger now than she did in her 50’s hands-down!!
The more comfortable my mom becomes with who she is, the more beautiful she appears. Her soul is settled. That glow comes from deep within.
If you were to pass her on the beach while she was running her daily 5klm, you wouldn’t know that she has 4 daughters, 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, with more on the way, and you wouldn’t gander a guess that this October she turns 74. I’m sure she has a “tell” that would give away her actual age but I would like to remain in her good graces so I won’t put too much effort into looking for that answer…
Do you have a “tell”? Do you have an age “giveaway” like in the video below?
I do. Although I do not let my age define me, I do have a few ageless “giveaways!”
No, it’s not the fact that my oldest will be 18 this year. It’s not even the fact that I have more grey hair peeping through my blonde mop each day.
Get me on a dance floor and you’ll notice it right away… I love to dance and I will show any millennial on the dance floor how to properly do the Macarena! Just don’t ask me to do the worm anymore… getting off the floor is a little bit harder than it used to be. Even my husband has a few dead giveaways, but his are more along the lines of “dangnabbit” and “golly gee willikers” 🙂
